You opened the door a little too vigorously and the handle has created a hole in the wall? Here is how to repair larger holes in gypsum walls.
With a drywall cutter, make all four sides of the hole even to give it a more regular shape, like a rectangle or a square. Remove as much debris as possible.
Create a furring for the wall by cutting a piece of wood, at least 10 cm (4") longer than the height of your hole. Make sure it is thin and narrow enough to pass through the opening in the wall. To prevent it from falling down the wall when you insert it in the hole, partially place a screw in the wood piece, at approximately 5 cm (2") from the bottom of the piece.
Insert the piece of wood in the hole and use the screw to hold it. Use two drywall screws to secure both ends of the wood piece, above and under the hole. Remove the support screw.
Cut a piece of gypsum to the required dimensions to fill the hole. Make sure it is the same thickness as the gypsum of your wall. Secure the piece by screwing a drywall screw in the furring.
Cover the surface to repair with self-adhesive joint tape. Cover the screws as well to better hide them.
Apply a thin coat of drywall compound with a trowel. Let it dry completely and lightly sand before applying a second coat. Repeat these steps until you have a completely smooth surface. Clean the walls with water and TSP and apply primer to seal the plaster before painting it.
