The power... of renovation!

Successfully installing wallpaper

1 Wallpaper, with its 1,001 patterns and textures, always creates a great impact on a decor. Here is how to install it on a wall to instantly glamourize the style of a room.

2 Cleaning

Before you start, protect the floors with plastic covers. Then, clean the installation surface thoroughly with a no-rinse degreaser, like TSP. If there are cracks or holes in the wall, repair them.

3 Priming and marking

Apply a coat of primer on the wall to seal it and make sure that the wallpaper fully adheres to it. Let it dry. Using a level, draw reference lines on the wall, leave the width of your wallpaper strips between each line; it will help you install your wallpaper perfectly straight. Note that it is recommended to start your installation in the center of the wall.

4 Cutting and soaking

Cut the first strip to the required length, adding a 6 cm (2") error margin. Roll the strip of wallpaper, patterns on the inside, and soak it in warm water for about 30 seconds. Take the strip out of the water, place it on the floor and fold it in a few sections, glued side on glued side. Let the wallpaper rest like that for five minutes to allow time for the adhesive to activate.

5 Applying

Apply the first wallpaper strip on the wall, aligning it on your reference lines. Let 3 cm (1") of excess paper overhang on the ceiling and on the floor. Use a smoother to spread the glue and remove air bubbles. To do so, slide the tool on the wallpaper from top to bottom and from the center to the outer edges.

6 Wiping and cutting

Wipe off the excess glue and water with a sponge. Before the glue dries, cut off the excess wallpaper on the ceiling and on the floor with a utility knife. For maximum precision, use the edge of the smoother to guide the blade.

7Joining

Before soaking the next strip, place it on the wall and match its patterns to those of the first one. Mark the top and the bottom of the strip for the cut. Once again, add a few excess centimetres of paper. Apply this strip, and all the others, in the same manner as the first one. Glue the joints carefully.
